Sequestered cell

Very high power TEM of a sequestered cell of a stage 3 embryo in vitro, 145-170 hours post-insemination (original magnification x34,200). A prominent feature of sequestered cells is undifferentiated or poorly differentiated mitochondria (M) containing an electron dense matrix and relatively few cristae. Cisternae and vesicles of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) are abundant and closely associated with the surface of the mitochondria. Free ribosomes, microtubules, and extensive arrays of annulate lamellae (AL) are present in the cytoplasm. Not shown but whorls of parallel membranes and structures resembling dilated Golgi complexes are also present in some sequestered cells.
